Preface

This Brief History of Photography, at over 360 pages, doesn’t seem particularly brief. The name comes from the brief nature of the entries, for they must be short to cover virtually every aspect of photography in the last 400+ years.

I began this project in 2004, intended as a three-to-four-page appendix for a book that was never written. It then took on a life of its own and the research consumed much of the next 16 years of my life. My journey ended in 2020, as it must end somewhere. Still, a few minor additions were made during the editing process, to keep it as “up to date” as possible.

The goal was not to compile an encyclopedia of every camera ever made, though it sometimes feels like that, but to include the seminal cameras ...
