Lesson 8: Creating Special Effects

Photoshop is known for its ability to create special effects. In this lesson, you’ll learn about several non-destructive effects that you can apply to your images. You will also have an opportunity to explore advanced effects that you can apply on your own.

Starting up

In this lesson, you will start with a Photoshop file that has already been layered and masked using the steps covered in previous lessons. Make sure that you have loaded the advpslessons folder onto your hard drive from www.digitalclassroombooks.com/cc/advphotoshop For more detailed instructions, see “Loading lesson files” in the Starting up section of this book.

Using Oil Paint as a Smart Filter

In this first section you will take advantage of Smart filters to create a painterly effect on your image. You can use Oil Paint as a Smart Filter to non-destructively add a classic, hand-painted look to an image. The filter works well with medium to high-resolution RGB images. You will work with a 1500 × 1139 pixel image at 300 ppi.
