In general, strategies for screenwriting have focused on the broad rather than the specific. Structure, character conflict, and the importance of character goals have dominated the literature on screenwriting. Modest attention has been allotted to genre as a meta-organizing principle. And too little attention has been given to the micro-tools of screenwriting—surprise, triangulation, and subtext. They will be our focus in this chapter.
