Underlying the examination of the filmmakers Kelly Reichardt, Eugene Martin, and Kathryn Bigelow is the idea that the spirit of film has always been bifurcated. Initially, the two opposing pathways were between the fantasy films of George Méliès and the realistic films of Louis Lumière. Within 20 years new pathways developed in the documentary works of Robert Flaherty, John Grierson, and Dziga Vertov relative to the development of a popular, commercial industry. The other pathway that was significant, also beginning in the 1920s, was the experimental work of Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí, and Man Ray.
