The learning and development practices taking part in the implementation of L&D strategy need to be based on an understanding of how learning takes place at the level of the organization, as covered by this chapter and, within that context, how individuals learn, as dealt with in Chapter 37.
There are two approaches to the analysis of learning at the organizational level: the concept of organizational learning and that of the learning organization. At first sight these may look the same but they are not. The initial section of this chapter deals with organizational learning and the next one with the learning organization. The third section compares the two.
