Dynamics Processing
Dynamic audio effects apply a time- varying gain to the input signal. The
applied gain is typically a nonlinear function of the level of the input sig-
nal (or a secondary signal). Dynamic effects are most often used in order to
modify the amplitude envelope of a signal. They often compress or expand
the dynamic range of a signal.
In this chapter, we will focus on two of the most common forms of dynam-
ics processing, dynamic range compression and expansion, as well as their
more extreme forms, limiting and noise gates.
Dynamic Range Compression
Dynamic range compression (or just compression) is concerned with map-
