While the original vision of Ethereum was a single public blockchain to serve as a “world computer,” the reality is much more nuanced. It is now clear that a single public blockchain cannot scale to the capacity needed for mass consumer applications. Ethereum itself is moving toward the direction of multiple interconnected blockchains for sharding and state channels (for more about side chains, see Chapter 13).
