The animal on the cover of Building Wireless Community Networks is a Carolina parakeet, Conuropsis carolinensis, the only parrot native to the United States. These foot-long, multicolored birds, with their green bodies and yellow and orange heads and necks, were voracious eaters of fruit and grain seeds, leading to their wholesale destruction as agricultural pests. Although they were once found all over the southeastern United States, the last known Carolina parakeet died in the Cincinnati Zoo on February 21, 1918.
