So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Android が世にでてから7年になります。本書『はじめてのAndroid』の第1版が発売されたとき、ここまでAndroidが広がるとは予想していなかったでしょう。2009年当時は Android のバージョンに正式にコードネームがつき始めたころで、日本ではまだ Android 搭載のデバイスがキャリアから発売されていませんでした。そんななか、いち早く日本語化した本書はまだまだ情報の少ない当時の貴重な情報源でした。私も初めて読んだAndroid開発本が本書の第1版です。それからAndroidは大きく進化し、開発環境も、そして開発手法も大きく変わってきました。
開発環境の一番大きな変更はIDE（統合開発環境）がEclipseからAndroid Studioに変わったことです。Android StudioはIntelliJ IDEAという優れたソフトウェアをベースにしており、Eclipseに比べて開発しやすくなっています。一方でEclipseベースで書かれたかつての書籍の情報が陳腐化してしまうという問題も起っています。書籍にとってはつらいことですが、開発環境の進化に書籍がついていくのは難しいことです。
今回本書を監訳するにあたって、原書の時点ではなく最新の Android Studio の内容に沿ったものにしています。とはいえ、これから先も Android Studio はアップデートされていくでしょう。その点、本書ではアップデートでなるべく影響が無いような説明がされています。例えばレイアウトを作成するためのグラフィカルエディターがAndroid Stduioにはありますが、この機能はしばしば見た目が変わったり機能が変わったりすることがありました。本書ではグラフィカルエディターではなく直接XMLを編集し、その意味を確認していく内容になっているため、今後 ...
