It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

By using the information stored in the routing table, the router can calculate the
shortest path between two network segments. After the router receives a packet sent
by a network host, the router compares the destination address of the packet with the
entries stored in the routing table. If there is a match, the packet will be forwarded to
the next router along the path to the destination network. Jumping from one router to
another is called hopping.
