So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Specifying the compiler
The code for this recipe is available at https://github.com/dev-cafe/cmake-cookbook/tree/v1.0/chapter-01/recipe-06 and has a C++/C example. The recipe is valid with CMake version 3.5 (and higher) and has been tested on GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows.
One aspect that we have not given much thought to so far is the selection of compilers. CMake is sophisticated enough to select the most appropriate compiler given the platform and the generator. CMake is also able to set compiler flags to a sane set of defaults. However, often we wish to control the choice of the compiler, and in this recipe we will show how this can be done.
