24Electric Aircraft⋆
24.1 Overview
The application of an electrically actuated drive system has natural appeal for its efficiency, relative simplicity, reliability, maintainability and cleanliness (eco‐friendly environmental issues – emission free). It led to the ‘More Electric Aircraft (MEA)’ initiative progressing towards all‐electric aircraft. Electrically powered aircraft awaited its opportunity, as the energy storage and harvesting technologies kept improving to the point when many innovative aircraft designs have emerged, some heading towards mass production of electric aircraft in the class of ‘Light Small Aircraft’ (LSA). Future operational prospects for bigger commercial electric aircraft are pursued by big industries.
Being not constrained by fighting against gravity, the automobile industry led the way to make successful production electric cars with increasing sales in the last two decades. Prototype electric aircraft started appearing from about that time, demonstrating the potential though still not viable for mass market on account of high cost, weight and low flight durations – the technology was in its developing stages to make breakthrough for mass market. Since the beginning of the twenty‐first century, rapid gains were made in energy storage capacity as well as cost and weight coming down, mainly driven by the automotive industry. The electric aircraft programmes gained impetuous to move forwardly rapidly.
Electric aircraft are invariably propeller driven by ...
