The word cinema is derived from the ancient Greek word kine, meaning “to move.” Cinema is a shortening of “cinematography” (movement writing) which is what the medium as a whole was commonly called in its early days. Most names for it now refer directly to the movement aspects of cinema—for example: motion pictures or moving pictures or moving images. And of course the most widely used: movies.
