The ethics of intuition is not only inevitable, or nearly so. It is also
the right approach to resolving right-versus-right issues. Interpreted
this way, sleep-test ethics is a test of integrity. To understand this,
it is important to reflect on a fundamental characteristic of right-
versus-right problems.
Recall Steve Lewis’s problem and notice the ways in which it was
his problem and no one else’s. The colleagues who asked him to go
to St. Louis, simply because he was black, didn’t think there was a
problem. Andy Webster, Lewis’s mentor, realized that there might
