This section lists a few of the many companies that manufacture low-cost 802.11b wireless LAN access points. These access points are designed for use in indoor wireless LANs; however, wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) often add external antennas and deploy these access points in outdoor WANs. These low-cost access points do not have the full software functionality that more expensive equipment (designed for WISP use) has. Operators of free public-access community networks frequently use these low-cost access points:
