Diffraction of a wireless signal occurs when the signal is partially blocked or obstructed by a large object in the signal's path, as shown in Figure 2-9.

The edge of the hill partially blocks the microwave signal. As the bottom part of the signal intercepts the hilltop, the signal is diffracted, causing part of the signal energy to bend slightly around the hilltop.
