Box modeling 101

There are many different methods for creating 3D models. But box modeling is one of the easiest. Other methods can produce greater detail, and can be much better for animating. But box modeling can let you create an object quickly, and with minimal pain and boredom. So what is it?

It's one of the closest techniques to modeling with clay that you can use. It's called box modeling because that's what you start with, a box (as shown in the following diagram):

Then, we convert the object into subdiv polygons (in lightwave 3D, you just hit the Tab key), as shown in the following diagram:
