3.1 Introduction to Linear Systems

The subject of linear algebra centers around the problem of solving systems of (algebraic) linear equations. In high school algebra the method of elimination is used to solve systems of two and three (simultaneous) linear equations, with attention ordinarily confined to systems that have one and only one solution, and with applications to “word problems” that have one and only one “answer.” In this section we introduce some of the basic terminology of linear algebra by reviewing the elementary technique of elimination from a slightly more general viewpoint.
