3 Digital audio

Overview

The sound signal in multimedia and music technology systems is almost universally stored and manipulated in ‘digital format’. The same is becoming true of the general audio world, with the ubiquitous use of CDs, DATs and digitally based studio systems. This chapter explains what is meant by ‘digital format’, how it works, and why it is used, including its advantages and disadvantages. The chapter also describes the ‘sampling theorem’, which is a necessary aspect of the format. The material forms an essential prerequisite to later chapters which describe the techniques used to synthesise and manipulate sound.
