Overview

In this chapter, we build on the logic circuit fundamentals established in Chapter 6, to gain an understanding of the basic structure and operation of computer systems. The manipulation of digital audio signals in music technology and audio systems is almost universally carried out by computers, and so some understanding of these important audio processing components is valuable.

In this chapter, we therefore learn what it is that constitutes a computer program, from the point of view of the machine (the computer), and also from the point of view of the programmer, and how the data manipulated by such programs is represented.
