Writing a book is a lonely, slow, and occasionally masochistic pursuit—especially when it’s something you do on the side, like knitting, except with more existential dread and less wool. In my case, I couldn’t have done it without the help, patience, and intellectual generosity of many colleagues, students, editors, and friends who made the process slightly less isolating, much more efficient—and occasionally even fun.
