Despite the nebulous, wishy-washy nature of the “authenticity” concept, there are some generally agreed-upon attributes or definitional foundations for the term, which highlight some of its most commonly associated qualities, especially in mainstream or popular uses.
Most notably, authenticity entails genuineness (being truthful to others and yourself), congruence (acting in line with your values), and autonomy (ignoring external pressures so as to behave freely). It also concerns the imperative of blending our personal and professional selves by “bringing our whole self to work” or eliminating the psychological distance between our work and our personal identity.
