Introduction

This is a sergeant’s book, not a general’s book. Generals concentrate on espousing theory and planning grand strategies. Sergeants concentrate on mustering a group of people, supplying them with the equipment, knowledge, and tactics to undertake a task, and accomplishing that task as efficiently as possible. We programmers, the ones on the front lines of the application-development wars, are sergeants. We simply don’t have the time to worry about theory; we are struggling just to keep our heads above the water and our projects under time and budget. We need immediate access to whatever tools and knowledge are going to help us implement our code in time.
