This is a sergeant’s book, not a general’s book. Generals concentrate on espousing theory and planning grand strategies. Sergeants concentrate on mustering a group of people, supplying them with the equipment, knowledge, and tactics to undertake a task, and accomplishing that task as efficiently as possible. We programmers, the ones on the front lines of the application-development wars, are sergeants. We simply don’t have the time to worry about theory; we are struggling just to keep our heads above the water and our projects under time and budget.
