Abstract
Some well-known varieties of pre-coordinate indexing are Chain Indexing (CI), Preserved Context Indexing System (PRECIS) and POPSI, while UNITERM is the most well-known variety of post-coordinating Indexing. The CI, devised by Ranganathan, begins with breaking of the whole class number of a document at every digit and substituting the digit by term used for it in classification scheme adopted. Then the type of link (sought link, unsought link, false link or missing link) represented by each term is identified. Next, all the terms representing sought links are arranged in last-to-first order and the string so created represents the specific subject of the document concerned.
