The GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) gives developers lots of control over data layout using its attributes. You can find out about all of the supported attributes and their meaning by going to the GCC Type Attributes page.
Other compilers provide similar functionality, but their APIs might differ. For example, Microsoft compilers define the #pragma pack compiler directive to declare packed structures. More details can be found on the Pragma Pack Reference page.
