Paradigm-shifting applications are an exciting prospect if the novel properties, particularly involving quantum mechanical behavior, that nanoscale structures exhibit can be controlled and harnessed. New functional molecule-based devices are already being perfected and in the last few years there has been significant progress in the control of the fabrication methods for nanoscale architectures leading to operational quantum-based devices. The next decade should see an explosion in the number of new products based on intelligent nanosystems with new physicochemical properties at reasonable cost and with wide availability.
