Finally, there is software testing. At a commercial software company, an equal amount of time is spent testing as is spent developing. Some software companies have as many testers as developers. In many cases, 50% of the developer's time is spent testing, so the ratio could be even more sharply slanted. Test cases are unbelievably expensive. In fact, there are often more lines of code in the testing systems—which, by the way, also need to be tested—than in the program itself. Sometimes it feels like software companies are less in the software industry than in the testing industry.
