Upgrades have become so complex, expensive, and integral to business processes that the term upgrade can be a misnomer. According to Gartner, Inc., enterprise software upgrades can cost up to 30% of the original software installation price, take more than a year to complete, and require companies to revamp their technology infrastructures and business practices. CIOs have to present a strong business case for why, in these difficult economic times, their company should go through the trouble and expense. That's a tough sell to most corporate boards.
