salesforce.com was founded in 1999 by Marc Benioff, a 25-year software industry veteran and Oracle executive who left Oracle in 1999 to pursue a simple idea: delivering enterprise applications via the Web. With that vision, and with a team of three software developers, Benioff began salesforce.com—what Steve Jobs would later refer to as customer relationship management (CRM) “for the masses.”

salesforce.com was started in a rented San Francisco apartment next door to Benioff's. It received no venture capital investment but was funded by Benioff and his former boss, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. Benioff gave his company a mission—the end of software.
