Entities are the atoms of XML. Entities typically correspond to files or network messages but could potentially be part of any storage medium. To put order around the chaos of multiple entities, XML 1.0 defines a document as one or more entities that comprise a single structured data object. The Infoset models an XML 1.0 document as a document information item, which, as shown in Figure 1.2, is generally considered the root of the object model defined by the Infoset.
