XPath offers a concrete syntax for identifying subsets of an XML document. An XPath location path expression consists of one or more location steps, each of which contains an axis identifier, a node test, and one or more predicate expressions. These simple XPath constructs make it possible to precisely identify document subsets of interest. While XPath is for intradocument addressing, XPointer makes it possible to perform interdocument addressing by placing XPath expressions within URI fragment identifiers. XPointer also extends the XPath data model by making it possible to address points and ranges within a document's Infoset. Finally, XBase and XInclude provide an XPointer and Infoset-based alternative to general external entities. ...
