Chapter 1. Why Gamestorming?
The great, transformative technologies are the ones that make the invisible visible: They enable us to see something, experience something, imagine something that we never knew existed before. Some of those examples are the telescope, the microscope, the fMRI—and even something as simple as the sail. The sail enabled us to see parts of the world and cultures that we never knew existed, and in doing so, it suddenly not only challenged our own assumptions but expanded our space of possibility.

If you could peer inside someone’s mind, you might see a sort of matrix, an interlocking web of ideas, assumptions, biases, beliefs, and stories. In the field of neuroscience, this is called a “space of possibility.” A space of possibility describes what knowledge or next steps are available to you in terms of your perception. Each individual’s space is unique, built from personal, historical experiences that construct our views of reality.

Why this space matters is because it shapes who you are, how you show up, and how you live. It defines what you expect, assume, and imagine to be possible. The more nodes in your space of possibility, the more complex or nuanced it is, the more steps you can take to see things differently.
