Before you set out to the store with your shopping list, be sure to take a quick look at some things you'll need to watch out for:
If you're going to install a wireless network, remember that 802.11a is incompatible with both 802.11b and 802.11g. You can mix 802.11b and 802.11g equipment, but you'll lose the 802.11g performance advantage.
Access points don't offer the firewall protection that you find in routers. Choosing an access point rather than a router for the interface between your home network and the Internet is asking for trouble because hackers will be able to access your network.
Poor-quality cables can prevent your wired network from performing properly. Make sure you look for Cat5E cables ...
