Il existe un consensus clair parmi les scientifiques sur la trajectoire climatique de notre planète - elle se réchauffe à un rythme alarmant. Dans son dernier rapport, le Groupe d'experts intergouvernemental sur l'évolution du climat (GIEC) a déclaré : "Les activités humaines, principalement par le biais des émissions de gaz à effet de serre, ont sans équivoque provoqué le réchauffement de la planète, la température à la surface du globe atteignant 1,1°C au-dessus de 1850-1900 en 2011-2020."1 La figure 1-1 illustre ces tendances de réchauffement de la planète et d'élévation du niveau des mers. La nette augmentation des températures mondiales et du niveau des mers coïncide avec la révolution industrielle autour du 19e siècle et s'est accélérée au cours des deux dernières décennies.
