11.10 RF Test Specification of Tunnel Projects

Some of the principles of RF measurement and verification that are typically used for indoor coverage systems (see Section 5.2.2) can also be applied to tunnels. However, it is crucial to realize that tunnels are a special environment and specifications on how to perform and evaluate RF measurements of the implemented system are very important.

Due to the great complexity of a tunnel project, mobile operators will typically engage with a third party supplier/installer to design, implement and verify the system.

Therefore the RF test procedure and specification has to be set in stone at an early stage to make sure that all parties uses the same metrics and procedures for the design verification measurements.

You must as a minimum specify these points in the design and test specification:

  • Type of calibrated measurement tool to be used (not any test mobile from a random drawer somewhere . . .);
  • Calibrated antenna type/gain;
  • Test set-up, antenna on tripod, location on the test vehicle;
  • Test frequencies;
  • RF measurement data sample speed/distance, it is recommended to use William Lee's criteria; Lee calculated that for a valid RF measurement you need to sample an average thirty-six samples over a distance of 40λ (wavelengths);
  • Speed of measurement vehicle;
  • Where the test is done (inside train coach, open track, location on the track);
  • Success of KPIs; level, distribution, min. level;
  • Typically the KPI would state that you need to confirm ...
