How to Add an Image to a Tooltip

Chapter 9 discusses the long-awaited Tableau feature, Viz in Tooltip. I believe this will be a game-changer in how we blur the line between explanatory and actionable analytics. There’s no doubt this feature has the ability to reduce the time to insight and increase the accuracy of insights; two of my three tenets of good visualization.

My third tenet of good visualization is to make them more engaging, and with infinite applications, the Viz in Tooltip feature can also help us draw users in, and even add some company branding. This chapter shares how to use Tableau’s Viz in Tooltip to add an image to a tooltip.

How to Add Image Branding with the Viz in Tooltip Feature

For the past few years, I’ve used the following Tableau Public visualization to share my speaking schedule:

The Viz in Tooltip feature provides a great opportunity to integrate your own branding through the use of images. With the addition of this feature, I was able to improve the map visualization by adding my own custom images to the tooltips on hover. Now, when the viewer hovers over a date for one of our public Tableau training events, they see a product image along with the existing event information:
