It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Existem múltiplas definições para o termo singularidade tecnológica. A sua utilização remonta, pelo menos, ao artigo de Vinge (1993), que o autor começa provocatoriamente assim:
Dentro de trinta anos, teremos os meios tecnológicos para criar uma inteligência sobre-humana. Pouco tempo depois, a era humana estará terminada.
Para efeitos deste capítulo e deste livro, a singularidade tecnológica refere-se a um ponto no tempo em que certas máquinas atingem uma inteligência sobre-humana, ou superinteligência - o queestá sobretudo de acordo com a ideia original de Vinge (1993). A ideia e o conceito foram ainda mais popularizados pelo livro amplamente lido e citado de Kurzweil (2005). Barrat (2013) tem uma grande quantidade de informação histórica e anedótica sobre o tema. Shanahan (2015) fornece uma introdução informal e uma visão geral dos seus aspectos centrais. A expressão singularidade tecnológica em si tem origem no conceito de singularidade em física.
