It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
5 Confidence Intervals and Effect Sizes
This is the chapter in which a trumpet fanfare announces a more detailed discussion of CIs. At one level, most people have a reasonable idea what a CI tells us, as we discussed in Chapter 1. However, at a deeper level CIs are tricky, and it’s fascinating as well as important to try to understand them well. In this chapter I discuss four ways to think about and interpret CIs. Here’s the agenda:
- Errors of estimation and MoE
- Trumpets for CIs, and the dance of the CIs
- The t distribution
- An interlude on randomness
- Effect sizes
