In this chapter we consider designs that extend beyond the simple comparison of two conditions. We’ve already seen an example: Latimier and colleagues (Latimier, 2019) used three independent groups (Reread, Quiz, and Prequiz) to investigate the effect of retrieval practice on learning. In Chapter 7, we focused on comparison of the Reread and Quiz scores, but in this chapter we’ll consider such multi-group experiments as a whole. Our topic is designs with more than two independent groups, but still with just one IV (independent variable). In Chapter 15 we’ll take a further step, and consider extended designs that have more than one IV.
