In this chapter we’ll add a second independent variable. We could, for example, study rereading and retrieval practice in different disciplines, by investigating, say, the extent that a quiz giving retrieval practice might work differently in engineering and in philosophy. Discipline would be the second IV and we would have a two-way design. We could use four independent groups, one for each combination of study strategy (Reread or Quiz) with discipline (Engineering or Philosophy). That would be a two-way independent groups design.
