iBeacon has been around since 2013, which was way before Google's Eddystone's protocol. Due to its early inception, it was also the first Beacon protocol to be introduced. Unlike Eddystone, iBeacon protocol is proprietary and the specification is controlled by Apple. iBeacon is a much more simpler protocol to implement as compared to Eddystone. iBeacon just defines a single message format with 31 bytes of data as shown in the following figure:
