Rhythm in music is organized motion. It comes from the Greek word ritmus, to flow. If pitches are passengers, rhythm is the train that carries them. Rhythm is motion through time as movement is motion through space. It’s palpably organized time; many elements of musical rhythm are often referred to as time. Rhythm is easier to experience than it is to describe. It’s often thought of as the most important element in music. And there’s the long-lasting friendship between music and dancing.
