This is the first of three chapters about images in the 2D API. In this chapter, you'll learn the basics of loading and displaying images. Chapter 10, shows how you can modify the appearance of images using the 2D API's image processing classes. Finally, Chapter 11, peels the skin off images to show you how everything works inside.
If you're already familiar with image handling in JDK 1.1 and earlier, some of this chapter is review. But some of it isn't, so pay attention.
