The foundation of XP is built on a single, fundamental concept of software development: If performing an activity while developing software is considered a worthwhile task, then let's perform that activity so often that it's considered extreme. For instance, if testing is a good thing to do, let's test our code after each change that we make. Of course, XP espouses other principles, and we discuss them in the sections that follow, but this single, fundamental concept captures the essence of XP.
XP considers 12 principles so important that they should be applied at an extreme level. These principles are described in Table A.2.
