Below are two examples of reporting technique as a result of a big local Hong Kong story in 1996 and 1997: the Diaoyu islands, which were disputed territory between China and Japan. This story raised much anger in Hong Kong, where there were demonstrations and several attempts by activists to land on the disputed islands. The first time such an attempt was made, there was one death among the protesters. The third attempt, in May 1997, saw most accompanying reporters on a separate boat, rather than on the main protesters’ boat, which was now judged to be too subjective for good reporting, and also too dangerous.
