It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

규모가 큰 네트워크에서 네트워크 내 모든 라우터의 링크 상태를 저장하는 것은 모든 노드의 메
모리를 많이 소모하게 된다. 따라서 모든 링크 상태 프로토콜은 무수정 정보가 전달되는 범위를
작은 세그먼트나 그룹으로 나눈 라우팅 도메인으로 제한한다.
OSPF
는 이런 작은 세그먼트를
에어리어
area
라는 용어로 표현한다. 플러딩의 범위는 연속된 에어리어 내로 제한된다. 모든 라우
터 인터페이스에는 에어리어가 할당된다. 다른 라우터 인터페이스들은 다른 에어리어에 할당될
수 있다.
OSPF
는 두 단계 또는 계층 구조를 지원한다.
백본 에어리어
backbone
area
는 라우팅 계층의 가장
상위 단계이며 기본 에어리어다. 모든
OSPF
라우팅 도메인은 당연히 그리고 반드시 백본 에어
리어가 있어야 한다. 계층 구조의 두 번째 단계를
비백본 에어리어
nonbackbone
area
라고 한다. 비백본
에어리어는 여러 개 존재할 수 있지만 백본 에어리어는 유일하다. 다중 비백본 에어리어는 백본
에어리어를 통해 서로 연결된다. 백본 에어리어는 나눠질 수 없다. 즉, 하나의 연속된 세그먼트
