Casual Francis watchers might think that the pope wakes up every so often with an incredible idea backed up by an equally stunning proclamation. For example, in the first week of March 2014, just days shy of his one-year anniversary as pontiff, Francis did not evade a single question about same-sex civil unions. In an interview with Ferruccio de Bortoli of the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Francis said that states seek “to regularize different situations of living together” in order to ensure healthcare and other economic benefits.
