Who This Book Is For
The primary target audience for this book is the intermediate-to-advanced developer looking for a comprehensive introduction to WCF for building a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)—which implies the need for an enabling technology for building distributed enterprise systems. This book starts with a backgrounder on the evolution of SOA and a discussion about the four tenets of SOA and how WCF satisfies those tenets. After this, I dive into a top-to-bottom overview of core WCF concepts that all readers should know about before proceeding to specific features related to contract design, hosting, bindings, instancing and concurrency, throttling, reliability, security, and error handling.
My goal is to leave you with a deep understanding of each feature and its purpose, to provide you with hands-on practice to solidify your understanding, and to discuss practical usage and recommended practices. I try to answer the questions related to each feature based on design scenarios that I frequently encounter so there is an element of architecture and design discussion, mixed with explanations for the purpose of each setting.
WCF can be applied to many problem domains, including distributed communication, messaging, and web services—all of which are discussed for relevant scenarios in the book. I try to capture the beauty of the fact that you can apply the programming model of WCF to each of those domains. This book does not attempt to teach you everything about distributed ...
