I started planning this book with John Osborn of O’Reilly during the Beta 1 period of WCF in May 2005. Initially we discussed a short and simple book to help readers learn the basic features of WCF; however, as the book evolved and as my own experience with the platform deepened, I thought it would be important to provide a well-rounded and detailed perspective on the platform, consistent with my areas of expertise and interest. I have unending gratitude to John for his support in letting this book “evolve” to the published work it is today. Without his support and dedication to a quality product, the end product would not be the same. I’d also like to thank Brian MacDonald, who is one of the best editors in the business, and who helped significantly in the organization, quality, and consistency of this text, not to mention fast-tracking the final review cycle.

As I began the book, I was commissioned by Microsoft to contribute to the CardSpace (then “InfoCard”) Beta 1 code to integrate portable devices with the identity provider.
