I am a better CISO because of the people I know and speak with on a daily basis. This isn’t just networking or professional development—it’s fundamental to how I operate as a security leader. The community you build around yourself directly impacts your effectiveness, your resilience, and your ability to grow throughout your career.
But creating such a community takes conscious effort. The cybersecurity field can be inherently isolating for several reasons. We deal with unique challenges that people outside our industry don’t fully understand. We carry responsibilities that can feel overwhelming. We make decisions with incomplete information under significant pressure. Without a strong support network, it’s easy to feel like you’re facing these challenges alone.
But you don’t have to—and in fact, you shouldn’t try to. The security community is amazing. If you’re not using it, you’re losing out on a lot.
